Solidifying the Abstract: New Works by Robert Bell and Kirk Snow Contrary to the meaning of the word, abstract art tries to make a replication of thoughts and concepts that have no concrete existence. Visually an artist has to transport the viewer to a place beyond what is natural. A place where belief is no longer an idea, but something with weight and volume. This is where the work of Robert Bell and Kirk Snow intersects. Robert Bell's work derives from a play with proportion and harmony in his heavy biomorphic forms. The paintings and prints he creates are in constant dialogue, playing their atmosphere off one another in a game of theme and variation. Bell identifies process as his most effective tool, using methodical technique to counter emotion and spontaneity. Kirk Snow uses form to dictate function in his unique screenprints. He devises a syntax that is inherent to a man made form, and puts it to use as a rule set in his work. The result is imagery comfortably familiar to the viewer, but wholly removed from the existence of the original object.
